The Tough Job Market That the 2011 Graduates Face

The 2011 graduates are facing a tough job market with the current economic situation that has pushed so many out of their jobs. Although it has been said that the economy is finally recovering, the number of jobs being offered is not enough especially as hundreds of thousands of young people graduate and join the rat race. Even teenagers looking for summer job are having some problem since even the jobs that they are used to getting like jobs at fast-food restaurants or amusement parks are being taken by adults who have lost their original jobs.

Tough to find jobs

The overall unemployment rate of 9%, combined with GDP growth in the first quarter of only 1.8%, and high energy, clothing and food prices, is not a good sign for these fresh graduates. Most likely they have incurred debts in order to finish their 4 years of college to get a degree so they feel it is imperative that they look for a job. The sea of competition is still great with hundred of job seekers competing for 10 jobs and it becomes harder to stand out.

Looking for a job, whether in the healthcare industry or otherwise, is not going to be easy and new graduates need to be patient. In order to stand out in a highly competitive market they need to know what employers are looking for. Being able to follow application guidelines is also important so employers understand that you know how to follow simple instructions. Most importantly, learn to adjust and adapt. Be flexible enough to accept a job that may not be your dream job or take a job in a different area. Yes, it is may be your dream to wear your business clothes but if it’s not possible for now then take or accept something else. Just make sure you stay in touch with the hiring manager from that preferred specialty so that you can get updates on the availability of the job you prefer.

Whether you are in work clothes or business clothes, new graduates should be looking for an environment that will offer them mentoring and a workplace where they will be valued. Work in a workplace where the culture for continuing education is prevalent so you can expect to receive trainings and seminars that will further enhance your skills. One thing that new graduates should remember is that technical or clinical skills are very important but employers believe that ideal candidates should have the right attitude of customer service. Essentially, you learn that skills can be learned but the right attitude which includes ambition, persistence and discipline, is a must have for any job seeker and young professional.
